Ventnor RFC News August 2024
As the new season approaches for Ventnor Rugby Club, the fixture list has now been published (thanks to Andrew Cooper for the design and print – Gamson Gray Design and Media).
They are currently winging their way to all Life Members, VPs and Sponsors. They will also be behind the bar at Watcombe or, if you want one sent out to you, let me know.
Neil Evans – our Director of Rugby – has a few pre-season games sorted, one of which will be The President’s XV v The Chairman’s XV that will take place on Saturday 7th September.
We will use this occasion to initiate our celebrations that mark the 50th anniversary of the club. We are hoping that many of the original players will be able to attend and we’ll be putting on a barbecue and music (thanks Skelley, Bob and Gareth).
Please try to come along: it’ll be a great day and our first chance to see some rugby at Watcombe in the new season.

In Other News:
Ventnor Carnival 2024
Well it wasn’t the success of last year for the Ventnor Carnival, because the hired generator failed to fire up which put paid to the sounds and lights (and confetti cannons!).
Despite this disappointment, we still got 2nd place in the Teams and Associations class!
Many thanks to Bob Parker for his work on the float which was stunning and to Gareth for the sounds and lights (sadly neutered by the lack of volts!).
In the face of all this misfortune, we and the members of the Ventnor Youth Football Club still managed to distribute the best part of a thousand leaflets extolling the virtues of sport at Watcombe Bottom.
Ventnor Rugby Club Sponsors 2024-25
Rog Evans and I have been doing our annual ring around of our faithful club sponsors and – once again – been stunned by the continued generosity demonstrated.
Our main sponsors – Red Funnel and AJ Wells – are both back on board and we have gained several new benefactors which is positive for the future of the club.
Due to this financial support, we continue to keep our player membership subscriptions to very manageable proportions and provide the best pitch in the league (thanks James Blake).
Looking forward to seeing you all at Watcombe on 7th September.
Best Regards
James
